Barefoot Nordic Walking Club


 Sunday saw the inaugural walk of the newly formed Barefoot Nordic Walking Club.
The only one of its kind in the UK, the club brings together Nordic walkers to enjoy social walks, training and for those that want to, racing, Since its launch on 1 May 2008, the club has rapidly attracted 21 members, of which 18 joined the launch walk - a circular route to Penyfan in the Brecon Beacons, the highest point in the country south of Snowdonia.
Led by Sue McDonagh, and assisted by Karen Ingram and Paula Wooding, keen Nordic walkers who recently completed a 45 mile walking challenge in the Peak District for MacMillan Cancer Support, the group enjoyed a steady ascent in beautiful weather.
Elevenses in the lee of Corn Du, rapidly turned into a leisurely lunch whilst admiring the spectacular views across the hills and reservoirs. With PenyFan as the goal, some of the walkers skirted Corn Du, meeting together to walk the broad approach to this high peak.
Photographed in triumphant mood on the cairn atop the table flat summit of PenyFan. Sue McDonagh, walk leader, said, “It was amazing to be on the top of Penyfan and for some of the group it was a real challenge. A few of us have had problems in the past with hips, knees and backs and Nordic walking has made it possible for us to get fit and complete a climb like today's”.
One of the amazing benefits of Nordic Walking is the stress it relieves from the joints, whilst exercising 90 per cent of your skeletal muscles. Great for releasing tension in the neck and shoulders it has been shown to be really beneficial for RSI and back problems.
Early sunshine had given way in the afternoon to chill winds, but this didn't deter the group from setting a fine pace along the Ridgeway towards, before reluctantly turning back and making the descent to the car park. This was where Nordic Walking Poles really proved their worth, when creaky knees began to protest at the steep downhill slope, but a shortened stride, "soft knees" and leaning back improved both comfort and speed. Well earned refreshments from the brilliant van in the car park marked the end of the walk, though no-one was keen to leave!
The club are planning at least 12 monthly day walks, along with shorter evening walks and social and challenge events. members are most welcome, but must have had a lesson with a Nordic Walking Instructor.
